If you are a food lover, you'll probably already know that Oaxaca is famous for many things, and one of them is its food! If you are a food lover, you definitely should visit the markets of Oaxaca.
La Merced
This is a beautiful market. Here you'll find vegetables, fruits, meat, cheese and more. I can't tell you every single thing they sell, but I want to give you some recommendations of good products you can find here. Tamales! ask anyone about "Doña Geno". She has one of the best tamales in the City. In front of Doña Geno, there is a door that takes you to the restaurant area. There you'll see La Florecita, a delicious place to have breakfast.
Note: if you want to buy fish, outside on Nicolas del Puerto street, there is a place called "La Red".
Address: Morelos street corner with Nicolas del Puerto.
20 de Noviembre
This is a food market, the perfect place to buy some traditional bread, and eat traditional dishes. There are a lot of food stands with similar menus. If you are coming to Oaxaca on the last days of October or the firsts of November, you should visit. Every bakery gives free bread tastes.
Address: 20 de Noviembre No. 512, between Mina and Aldama Street.
Mercado de Abastos
This is the biggest and cheapest market in Oaxaca. Most restaurants and local businesses buy their goods in this place. There are really tasty places to have breakfast, and many things to see. But, it is a little bit dangerous. If you want to go, we recommend you to search for someone who already knows the market to go with you. We also recommend you avoid wearing jewels or taking your cellphone out of your bag without first making sure it's safe to do it.
Address: Juarez Maza, Central de Abastos.
Benito Juárez
This market is next to the 20 de Noviembre market. Here you can find vegetables, fruits, meat, fish, chapulines and more. They also sell craftmanship of different regions, and also clothes. One of the most, if not the most famous business of traditional waters is in this market. It's called "Aguas de Casilda".
Address: Colon, between 20 de Noviembre and Miguel Cabrera.
Sánchez Pascuas
Like the other markets, in Sánchez Pascuas you'll find food to eat there or ingredients to cook at your place. It's a beautiful market and here you can also find really tasty tamales.
Address: Porfirio Díaz street, between Quetzalcoatl and Cosijopi.
Hidalgo
This market, according to some local people, has products that you'll not find in the other ones. One example is the "Japanese garlic" as we know it in Oaxaca. It's located in a more modern area of Oaxaca, La Colonia Reforma. Every Sunday the food stands are opened with tasty traditional dishes. We recommend you to try molotes.
Address: Link to it.
To finish is important to mention that markets usually work from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
