Trinidad de las Huertas is the name of the neighborhood where Villas Los Nogales is located in Oaxaca. Along with other neighborhoods located in the center area, is one of the oldest in Oaxaca City.
Oaxaca City's map was sketched back in 1529 by Alfonso García Bravo. The Cathedral was thought of as the principal point. Rich people of the time built their houses around the area, mainly with quarry. And once the City was sketched, a lot of churches construction started. Around each church, a neighborhood was created.
Even when Trinidad de las Huertas is less than 15 minutes walking from the Cathedral, back in the days it used to be the outskirts of the City. The area was destined to be orchards, therefore its name.
Being a very religious neighborhood since its beginning, we can see nowadays that the church takes a very important place in people's lives, especially the elders. Processions and different religious activities are very common here, especially the ones celebrated during the Day of the Dead.
Some years ago, we still were able to see vegetable fields, especially radish. Back in 1897, Francisco Vasconcelos president, noticed people in Oaxaca used to create radish sculptures for Christmas. So he encouraged them to contest, and this is how the Noche de Rábanos was born. Trinidad de las Huertas was the area where all the radish was recolected.
Now, the City has grown, and Trinidad de las Huertas with it. Considered as part of the central area, it has become one of the main neighborhoods of residential houses.
